Public education

Fire Prevention – Annually the Fayetteville Fire Department provides fire prevention education to over one thousand children.  This usually occurs during the month of October during Fire Prevention Week but is ongoing throughout the year.  Visits are made to schools and daycare centers or the children come for a firehouse tour.  Age based handouts and educational materials cover topics ranging from EDITH, fire safety and smoke detector use.  Apparatus tours give the children an up-close look at the “Big Red Trucks” and a chance to see that a firefighter in full gear is their friend.

CPR/AED Program – Classes are conducted by our four instructors under Onondaga County and American Heart Association guidelines.  Classes on Heart Saver AED, Heart Saver First Aid and Heart Saver Healthcare Provider are taught to approximately 300 students in 75 classes on a yearly basis.  Contact the station for class information.

PAD Program – According to the American Heart Association there are approximately 300,000 sudden cardiac arrests in the U.S. each year.  Chances of survival decrease by 7-10% per minute when care is delayed.  Survival rates as high as 50% have been achieved with PAD/AED programs.  The Fayetteville Fire Department’s Public Access Defibrillation program was begun in 2004 with the donation of four LifePak 500 AED’s from the Fayetteville Fireman’s Association.  The AED’s are available at the Fayetteville Senior Center, the Fayetteville Free Library, the Fayetteville Municipal Building and the Fayetteville Department of Public Works.  Instructors from the department trained the staff at each location in the Heart Saver AED curriculum.  The department maintains each unit and provides refresher training as needed.  The department acts as a resource for other community organizations or agencies wishing to establish their own PAD programs.

Car Seat Program – The Fayetteville Fire Department provides child car seat inspections at no cost to the public.  Inspectors are trained through the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration car seat program.  Seats are inspected to insure proper installation and are reinstalled if incorrect.  Unsafe seats, or seats over six years in age, are replaced at no cost.  The program was begun by a $2,000 donation from the Fayetteville Fireman’s Association.  The department staffs inspection stations at a host of community events throughout the year and through monthly inspections at the firehouse.  Contact the station at 637-6101 to schedule a car seat check.

Knox Box Program – “The Knox Box is a rapid entry system that provides non-destructive access to commercial and residential property.  More than 9,000 fire departments and government agencies use Knox Box products for safe and secure entry.”  Through an aggressive program within the district, the Fayetteville Fire Department has seen over 30 units installed.  The department advocates use by all property owners whether public or private, commercial or residential.  Call the station at 637-6101 for details about this program.
