Today marks the tenth anniversary of September 11th, 2001, and offers all of us a chance to reflect. As part of the Fire Service family, we remember most dearly the 343 New York City Firemen killed that morning, heroes who laid down their lives in an effort to rescue and evacuate civilians trapped in upper floors of the World Trade Center, undoubtedly saving thousands and thousands of lives. What’s more we remember the 55 and counting who have since died of injuries and illnesses related to the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. Their deep and profound sacrifice has brought great honor upon themselves, the FDNY, and the Fire Service as a whole. However the greatest tragedy of September 11th would be if we stayed, right there in lower Manhattan, staring into a smoldering pile of rubble. If we remained in that place, sifting through the ashes of grief and despair. On this September 11th let us all take on a new way of remembering. An active way of remembering that allows the sacrifice of these 500 great men to inspire us to a greater and fuller understanding of our callings in our lives and in the Fire Service. Provoking us to live every day to the fullest knowing that it may be our last. Spurring us to appreciate even more fully the precious gift of the time we spend with our families. And leading us to truly love and serve our brother and sisters on “The Job,” placing their needs and desires above our own. Let us, this day, begin to carry the memory of these heroes anew, letting it burn within us, driving us to be men and women who can rightfully claim the honor, earned by the sacrifice of so many. NEVER FORGET Manhattan Box 5-5-8087 World Trade Center, 9/11/2001FDNY Tribute: http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/media/tribute/tribute.html
