B & B LUMBER - SIGNAL 99
Wednesday, March 12, 2008
-
At 1827 hrs Fire Control dispatched Jamesville Fire to B&B Lumber on Solvay Road for sawdust on fire outside the building, possibly extending into the building. The call was upgraded to a possible structure bringing DeWitt and Fayetteville E-7 to the scene. Engine 7 was dispatched as the FAST Team. On arrival fire was found in a silo used for sawdust collection and the Signal 99 was transmitted. Engine 7 was the third arriving unit and the operator went to work establishing a water supply for the Jamesville and DeWitt engines. Due to the lack of hydrants on top of the quarry, tankers were requested and a drafting operation was set-up. The crew from Engine 7 was the initial FAST Team but was quickly reassigned from FAST duties to suppression duties due to a lack of available manpower. As smoldering sawdust was removed from the silo by payloader, crews would wet it down. At times teams entered the structure to check the structure and extinguish hotspots. 20C2 (Shepardson) was assigned to Safety. Fayetteville crews operated for just over 2 hours. Jamesville C-1 (Johnson) had the "Solvay Road" Command.
