Located in the eastern suburbs of Onondaga County, in the geographic center of the Town of Manlius, is the Village of Fayetteville. The village was established in 1792 and became a thriving stop along the Erie Canal in the 1800’s. The Fayetteville Fire Department was established in 1845.  It consisted of two companies; the Mechanic’s Hook and Ladder Company on Highbridge Street and the Hose Company on Center Street. In 1888 the Center Street station was destroyed by fire. As a result, the two companies merged and have remained a single entity ever since. In 1924 the department purchased its first motorized apparatus, an International pumper. The Fayetteville Fire Department began providing EMS transport in 1942 with the purchase of a LaSalle ambulance. The winter of 1987 saw the arrival of the department’s first aerial ladder built by LTI. Currently the department operates 2 Class 1 Engines, an Aerial Ladder, a Squad, Brush Truck, 3 ambulances and a Medic Car. The Fayetteville Fire Department is led by Chief Paul Hildreth. There are 48 volunteer members who perform fire, EMS and administrative duties.& In 1985 the department became combination when it hired its first employee. Since then the staffing level has increased to include 12 full time employees and 1 part timer. Fire and EMS services are provided to approximately ten thousand residents in the Village of Fayetteville and Town of Manlius. The fire district encompasses many target hazards, among which are; Towne Center at Fayetteville, Northeast Medical Center, three senior residential centers, four elementary and middle schools and numerous daycares. A combination of residential, commercial and industrial structures, with an assessed value of over $900 million, can be found in the departments first due area. The Fayetteville Fire Department provides fire protection, (structural/wildland), rescue (auto extrication/technical) and ALS ambulance services. Training is provided by the Municipal Training Officer and training staff for all members. Fire and life safety inspections are conducted on all commercial and multi-residential properties in the village. The department provides training in fire prevention and CPR to community groups on a continual basis. In 2004 the department established a Public Access Defibrillation program for all village owned buildings which it administers and maintains. In 2005 the department began a child safety seat inspection program through the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. In its one-hundred and sixty one year history the Fayetteville Fire Department has lost 3 members in the line of duty. The first occurred in 1951 when Benjamin Proper was killed in an explosion at the Stofford Chemical Plant in the 500 Block of East Genesee Street. Myron Hickock died from a heart attack while responding to a call on Indian Hill Road in Manlius in his personal vehicle in 1958. In 2002 Career Firefighter Timothy "TJ" Lynch died after becoming trapped in a basement fire on Sweet Road. in Pompey.
